A Baby Nursery — Creating Cradle Comfort
Both Meagan and her mother, whose Grandma’s name will be “Mimi”, are self-taught decorators who were heavily influenced by their dear family friend, the late celebrated Tulsa based interior designer Charles Faudree.
Tulsa-transplant, Meagan McCracken Jamaluddin, and her Woodlands-native husband, Shan Jamaluddin – expectant parents – have prepared a beautiful baby nursery in an ode to English children’s author, illustrator and animal lover, Beatrix Potter.
“Connor is the name we have chosen for our little Indian Leprechaun baby,” jokes Meagan as she pours orange juice into festive goblets. “The nursery is completed and we are all waiting to meet him. Even Bentley, our dog, knows something exciting is about to happen.”
The nursery echoes the style of Meagan and Shan’s Grogan’s Mill home: a mix of French Country with pops of modern. Working as a team, Meagan and her mother (whose “Grandma name” will be “Mimi”), are self-taught decorators, heavily influenced by their dear family friend, the late-celebrated, Tulsa-based interior designer, Charles Faudree.
The nursery’s soft pastel palette and storybook animal accents make this room feel like a cozy cloud. The design stems from the 2 Jane Churchill fabrics: “Alphabet Beatrix Potter,” which was selected for the crib skirt and chair glider pillow and “Silvan,” with its graphic tree repetition, for the curtains and pillow backing. Montgomery County’s All About Stitches Drapery Workroom (owned by Esme Culotta) created the curtains, crib skirt and coordinating pillow.
For wall art: a customized Esty “Penmagic” map of Connor’s new Woodlands world hangs above the daybed; two framed Bruce Bitter monoprint collages Meagan purchased at The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival flank the curtains; and Meagan created an original piece of art for the coveted above-the-crib space.
“I wanted to try something fun that would tie-in all the colors of the room and stimulate Connor’s senses,” she explains. “And let’s be honest, amateur abstract art is ideal for a beginner—especially one that will have a newborn looking at it!”
The bookcase/changing table/storage wall opposite the windows serves many functions and shows off myriad sentimental items including a hand-knit knight’s helmet given to Meagan and Shan by a dear friend who was among the first to know they were pregnant and learn the baby’s gender.
Meagan and Shan met at a mutual friend’s wedding in San Antonio and then married in 2015 in Napa Valley, California. Subsequently, Meagan moved from Dallas to The Woodlands, where Shan is the Chief Operations Officer of Epcon Industrial Systems, Inc, a family business that Shan’s father started in 1977 in The Woodlands area.
For the past 2 years, Meagan had served as the Director of Development at Interfaith of The Woodlands overseeing special events and fundraising campaigns. She loved her job and her colleagues and is especially proud of the way the community rallied together during Hurricane Harvey. She describes her time at Interfaith as “precious,” because it directly connected her to The Woodlands community.
“Interfaith is such an integral part of the DNA of The Woodlands. Working there made The Woodlands my home – not just my husband’s,” explains Meagan. “As an interfaith family ourselves (Muslim and Christian) I see the incredible foresight the Interfaith of The Woodlands founders George P. Mitchell and Reverend Don Gebert had in bringing a diverse community together through community service.”
Meagan and Shan are looking forward to future Woodlands baby-in-stroller walks to Mimi and Poppy’s house and Papa Aziz and Pia’s house. They also have plans to show Grandma Joy the Glade Cultural Center and the Waterway Art Bench Collection when she visits from Illinois to meet Connor.
As the proverbial stork circles the Jamaluddin home, Meagan is beaming with pride and gratitude from the cozy atmosphere created in Connor’s baby nursery.
