Do Your Eyes Deceive You? — Anat Ronen Paints The Woodlands
Anat Ronen is an award-winning local urban artist who started her career from scratch with no formal art education. She is known for her murals, street painting, event art and public art.
You have probably seen her work before—perhaps last year at The Woodlands’ Craft Beer & Art Crawl in Hughes Landing where she produced 2-dimensional chalk street art or maybe you’ve driven past her gorilla mural near Houston Community College, or admired her painted flowers that disguise the traffic light boxes in Houston or from your car window seen one of the large red stars painted on the side of myriad Texas Highway underpasses. She also painted the ghost murals at Lakeland Village Center in Bridgland, a Howard Hughes award-winning master planned community in Cypress.
This month, Ronen embarked on a Creekside Park Village Green assignment for Howard Hughes for a trompe l’oeil (trick-of-the-eye) mural. For this piece she created a 2-dimensional, interactive Italian village street scene on the wall next to Crust Pizza Co. The Italian streetscape creates the illusion of being in Italy and ties in with the Italian-food concept of Crust Pizza.
“Anat is an amazing urban artist, and we are thrilled to have her creativity come to life in Creekside Park Village Green, “says Jim Carman, Senior Vice President, Commercial for The Howard Hughes Corporation. “Her painting style brings interactivity, fun and a sense of wonder to Creekside Park Village Green.”
Ronen’s art career has an incredible origin story. While applying for a special artist visa to stay in the United States (she emigrated from Israel), she had to show proof she had unique artistic talents. Pushing herself to amass art work quickly meant being able to stay in America, so saying she was highly motivated to book art gigs is an understatement!
“I pushed myself in painting as a means to survive,” explains Ronen. “In the process I discovered what it really meant to become a working arist—and I am forever grateful.”
Ronen teaches street art and street painting at the Houston Art League and for private clients. She has produced mural work for heavy hitting companies like Disney, Google, Neiman Marcus and The Houston Zoo – to name just a few!
