VP of MPC, Health Melton, reflects on playing football for West Point

by Lorrie Parise

The rival Army vs. Navy football game is set for Saturday, December 10 at M&T Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. CBS will air the game at 2:00 pm. Our very own Heath Melton, Vice President, MPC Residential for The Woodlands Development Company and avid fan of Army, is eager to watch the game as West Point is his alma mater.

Heath Melton graduated from West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Business Management and a minor in System Engineering. During his first two years at West Point, Melton played tailback for the Army Football Team. "West Point recruited me to play football. With a full scholarship at a Tier 1 institution, I decided this was the best opportunity to further my education,” Melton said. "For my final two years of college I decided to "hang it up” and make academics my main focus.”

His greatest sports memories include the experience losing a nail bitter in his Freshman year in the 1996 Independence Bowl when the Army Cadets took on the Auburn Tigers culminating the end of a 10-2 season.  Melton also remembers the 1998 football game, during his Sophomore year, when Army beat Navy 34-30.

Melton attended Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood, Arizona where he played fullback for the football team. Three of his four years, Melton played on the varsity team. In high school, he also played baseball. "I played third base and pitcher for Mingus Union. I had a chance to play college baseball but selected football instead,” Melton remarked. His two older brothers went on to play college baseball.

Melton is a big fan of professional sports teams in Houston including the Astros, Texans, Dynamo and even the Sugar Land Skeeters, an Atlantic League Professional Baseball Team. He enjoys watching his kids participate in sports and has filled the coaching role on several occasions.

"Sports is a big part of our family make-up. We are extremely competitive and enjoy cheering each other on as a family,” Melton stated.

Melton notes that sports activities are a big part of The Woodlands’ community. In fact, The Woodlands High School Highlanders advanced to the State semifinals as they will take on Allen at the 2016 UIL state playoffs on Saturday, December 10 at 1 pm at Darrell K Royal Stadium in Austin. As 2016 District Champs, The Woodlands Highlanders are currently undefeated at 14-0.

"The Woodlands is known for both academics and sports dominance in the area,” Melton said. "In fact, The Woodlands Gridiron Giveaway Promotion is part of the basis for this sports’ incentive.”

The Woodlands Gridiron Giveaway Promotion: when homebuyers purchase a new home in The Woodlands between October 1, 2016 and New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2016, they will receive a $5,000 tailgating package or up to $5,000 toward closing costs with a chance to win $10,000. The tailgating package includes a 60” 4K UHD TV, luxury gas grill and a high-end cooler. Additionally, a random drawing will take place before January 31, 2017 among all buyers that sign a contract to purchase a new home during the promotional timeframe and entrants whose entries are received by December 31, 2016. The winner will receive $10,000. No purchase is necessary for a chance to win this $10,000 award.  Click here for more information.
