The Woodlands Highlanders Radio Network brings live action to fans

by Lorrie Parise

The Woodlands Highlanders have won their fifth straight district title – bringing them to a 13-0, undefeated season. This Saturday the team will take on Round Rock at the 2016 State Playoffs Regional Championship at Baylor’s McLane Stadium in Waco.

Nick Wolda, who by day is the director of community relations at The Woodlands Township and president of The Woodlands CVB, wants to bring you the game live – even if you can’t be there in person. That’s why he founded The Woodlands Highlanders Football Radio Network.

"I started The Woodlands Highlanders Football Radio Network back in 2003, the year we went to the State Championship game,” Wolda said. "There was a need to have all of The Woodlands’ games aired, both home and away,” Wolda said. I recognized that need and visited with Coach Mark Schmid about it.”

He was thrilled, and the rest is history.

"Originally, we were on the FM dial, but as smart phone technology improved, we moved the program to the internet.  Now we have listeners from all over the world, and of course, predominately The Woodlands.”

Wolda provides the play by play action, while Hometown Hero Rob Eissler provides the comments.  Andre Burnett, aka Dr. Drew, delivers sideline reporting. John Butler and Stan Freeman provide the engineering. Along with Wolda, Eissler have been with the network since the beginning.

Traditional remarks you will hear on the show include Wolda saying "Pump Up the Bagpipes” when the Highlanders score a touchdown. Listeners will also hear "Eissisms,” which is the best of Rob Eissler’s humor.  The former Texas Legislator was once praised by Texas Monthly magazine for the "best use of wit.”

The Woodlands Highlanders Football Radio Network has had thousands of unique visitors this year as the team charges towards the State Championship.  Wolda says he’s proud of his network program.

"I’m thankful for the leadership of Coach Schmid and his being open to broadcasting. Coach is a tremendous human being who places high values, work ethic and respect for others in the program. It’s a delight to be the ‘Voice of The Woodlands Highlanders,’ and it means very, very much to me.”

Speaking of football, want an opportunity to tailgate at a new home in The Woodlands? When homebuyers purchase a new home in The Woodlands between October 1, 2016 and New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2016, they will receive a $5,000 tailgating package or up to $5,000 toward closing costs with a chance to win $10,000. The tailgating package includes a 60” 4K UHD TV, luxury gas grill and a high-end cooler. Additionally, a random drawing will take place before January 31, 2017 among all buyers that sign a contract to purchase a new home during the promotional timeframe and entrants whose entries are received by December 31, 2016. The winner will receive $10,000. No purchase is necessary for a chance to win this $10,000 award.  Click here for more information.
