If I had to explain my experience at CURRENT in one word, it would be
‘surprising.’ I’ve eaten at a lot of hotel restaurants, and my takeaways are
usually the same: subpar service, inflated prices and mediocre food. The new,
150-seat eatery in The Westin at
The Woodlands breaks the mold. The servers are attentive, the prices are on
par with nearby establishments and the food shines.
"We don’t want to just be labeled as a hotel restaurant,”
said Jonathan Mack, Director of Food and Beverage at The Westin at The
Woodlands. "Obviously guests are a big part of our day-to-day traffic, but we also
want to become a place that locals frequent, too.”
When they do visit, those locals will be happy to find
dishes that feature regionally-sourced ingredients -- like freshly-baked bread
from Kraftsmen Baking in Houston
and organic greens from Sustainable
Harvesters in Hockley. And as the name alludes, CURRENT’s menu changes seasonally, something that’s imperative to the restaurant’s concept and
Chef de Cuisine, Nathan Friend.
"We change the menu quarterly, which allows us to showcase
farm-to-table foods while maintaining a low carbon footprint,” says Friend, a
graduate of the famed Le Cordon Bleu. "By using what’s in season, we spotlight
the best and brightest regional ingredients.”
On the summer menu, dishes like sweet corn soup and crispy
soft shell crab speak to this.
As if the food isn’t enough, the space itself is stunning.
Designed by Waldrop Nichols out of
Dallas, the restaurant features panoramic views of The Woodlands Waterway® and contemporary, airy décor.
"Our hope is that CURRENT will become a place where people
can enjoy brunch with friends, a business lunch with clients or a romantic
dinner date,” says Mack. "We’ve really got something for everyone.”
Modern and inspiring, CURRENT is a welcomed addition to The
Woodlands’ already-booming food scene.
CURRENT is located at 2 Waterway Square Place inside The
